MATI
Summer Intensive Course

2023 SWU_Meta Art Therapy Institute (MATI) Summer Intensive Course Series

: Art Therapy Theory and Practice with Art-making and Sharing with Dr. Ikuko Acosta from New York University

Seoul Women's University's Meta Art Therapy Institute (hereafter MATI) will open seasonal intensive classes starting in the summer of 2023, the first time that we have recovered our normal daily lives since the pandemic. In the art therapy field at home and abroad, art therapists have experienced many changes and requests for adaptation, and have been challenged in their professional calling and role as professionals, as well as in their continuous education and growth. Even during the pandemic, opportunities for learning, re-education, and supervision through non-face-to-face real-time or video materials such as Zoom or webinar sessions were provided in various ways beyond the constraints of time and space, and through these, art therapists had the opportunity to respond to the changes and demands of the times. Fortunately, starting this summer, we will be able to experience a new season where we can study and grow while re-exploring and establishing relationships while experiencing full encounters and communication with people, free from mandatory mask wearing. Accordingly, MATI is very pleased to invite Professor Ikuko Acost (Ph.D., LCAT, ATR-BC) of New York University as the first guest lecturer for the summer intensive education series for art therapists.

Professor Acosta has been learning and teaching art therapy from Professor Edith Kramer at New York University for a long time, supervising graduate students and experts, and has continued the footsteps of the history of art therapy to this day. In particular, 2024 will be the 10th anniversary of Professor Kramer's death. In domestic art therapy, the concept of "Art as Therapy" has been introduced, but there has been no deep reflection or education on the role of art in art therapy, the role of art therapists, and their academic and professional identity. This summer, through a class with Professor Acosta at Seoul Women's University, we will study the classic concept of art therapy in a new era context.

For those who are seriously studying and examining themselves while reflecting on their calling as art therapists and struggling to be active in clinical and educational settings, we expect that meeting Professor Ikuko Acosta will be a special time to shed light on the past and present and reestablish a vision for the future. Although it is not a course for the general public, [Art Therapy Supervision Theory and Techniques for Professionals] is a popular and useful lecture that field supervisors can take at New York University. In a time when the history of art therapy in Korea has been going on for over 30 years, we are confident that it will be the safest guide to supervision for art therapists who train art therapists and supervisors who perform supervision, and we invite those who are prepared.
